James Del Grosso was a photo realist of uncanny abilities and patience, who lovingly painted whatever surfaces challenged him. He understood the drama and power of photography and used this knowledge to not only frame his objects (notably his food paintings – onions, watermelon, bread and butter, pear and tangerine, etc.) against elegant and simple backgrounds, but to incorporate light in such a way as to beautifully enrich the color and texture. These paintings are reminiscent of the grand still lifes of the 17th century Dutch realists, yet more minimal and contemporary in feeling.
